I wanted to yell at my TV, “Run, Murphy! Run before this show destroys you as an artist!” But alas, this show was taped months ago - and my TV is not a phone.“The moment Alyssa Wray walked into the American Idol audition room, the judges immediately felt her star power and presence. There was a purity in his heartwarming performance of “Just the Two of Us,” so it was upsetting to hear Perry tell him that he’s “on the precipice of something cool” before telling him that he “needs to be more mainstream” in order for them to work with him. “It’s a bridge to somewhere I believed I’d never get to,” he said. Murphy has had a difficult life - he was born with half of his vision, he found his mom dead at a young age, and his father eventually lost his own battle with drugs - and he explained that music brought him peace. MURPHY, 27 | OK, this audition actually got me kind of angry. Well, no one’s going to be making fun of her after that performance of Emma Bale’s “All I Want.” The range, the grit, the appropriate use of runs - I’m a fan. That said, his original song - performed with a nice gravelly country voice - was a definite crowdpleaser.ĪBBY LEBARON, 19 | Despite working in social media, this gifted musician said she hasn’t shared her passion with the world for fear of being made fun of. I found this judging to be a little inconsistent, but I’ll chalk it up to her feeling protective of her own music.ĬALEB KENNEDY, 16 | This cowboy seemed much older when he entered the audition room, but then the judges asked him what he does, and he said, “Hang out with my buddies.” So, yeah, he’s definitely 16. According to Perry, Russell needs to earn that level of extra. HEATHER RUSSELL, 20 | This all-frosting-no-cake performer initially took Perry’s breath away with her cover of Perry’s own “Harleys in Hawaii,” but the audition ended with Perry telling her to tone it down with all the bells and whistles. And it’s a darn good thing Ruder can sing, otherwise that would have been straight-up cruel. Not only did they make us wait through a commercial break to find out McGhar’s fate, but Perry even faked her out, saying, “I’m not going to roll tide with you… but I am going to roll the dice.” (It was the equivalent of “I didn’t like it… I loved it!” Who has the time for such shenanigans?)īEANE, 23 | With his sweet ol’ grandma sending him good vibes from afar, this unassuming guy delivered a surprisingly soulful cover of VULFPECK’s “Wait For the Moment.” Personality and charm for days! And am I crazy, or does Beane appear to exist directly in the nexus between super corny and super hot (aka America’s two favorite flavors)? Just saying, he could turn out to be a dark horse in this competition.ĪSH RUDER, 21 | The only thing more heartbreaking than Ruder’s original song about her father - whose addiction to hard drugs and liquor severed their relationship for years - was having her father join her in the room so he could hear her sing it. McGhar was clearly nervous when she performed her first song, Little Big Town’s “Girl Crush,” but the judges were eventually about to pull out a better, more confident second song. (Trust me, I was once an extremely average 16-year-old boy.) The fact that he’s got a nice set of pipes didn’t hurt his chances of making it through to Hollywood, with Perry offering up those coveted (or are they cursed?) three little words: “Top 10 material.”ĬAMERON MCGHAR, 16 | This was one of the most oddly drawn-out auditions of the night. MICHAEL GEROW, 16 | With lyrics like “You’re the one who drove the nice boy out of me,” this original song proved that Gerow is willing to be far more emotionally vulnerable than your average 16-year-old boy. RE’H, 27 | After serving her country in the military, this one-woman hype machine served the judges an unforgettable audition of Donna Summer’s “Bad Girls.” (Complete with full choreography? Yes, please!) The way the judges were responding to Re’h, I was starting to worry that she wouldn’t make it through - and was fully prepared to be appropriately outraged on her behalf - but it turned out that my stress was for naught. At the risk of drawing the most basic comparison possible, it gave me “Driver’s License” vibes - a real showcase for Mach’s voice both in the bigger and smaller moments. LAILA MACH, 16 | This Gabby Barrett super fan kicked things off with an original piece that she calls the “angrier” version of Barrett’s song “I Hope.” While the judges pretended to totally know the song she was referring to, Mach sat down at the piano and absolutely killed it. Read on for more of this week’s successful auditions, including one that could not have been more emotionally exploitative - even for this show. The most popular paper lantern style from China is called the Suzhou-style Lantern. Paper lanterns for the Chinese people have not changed drastically since ancient times. Paper lanterns have been frequently used in China for a large portion of recorded history. Let’s take a closer look at some examples of these types of antique and vintage lanterns. There are many types of antique and vintage lanterns that have been made, but we’re going to limit our guide to some examples of the following types: paper lanterns, oil lanterns and kerosene lanterns. Decorative: Various types of lanterns add to the ambiance and help to lighten the mood antique and vintage paper lanterns may not have been much use to help light a room, but they sure lightened the mood and brightened spirits with beautiful intricate designs.Religious: Paper lanterns were often used to commemorate religious occasions, especially in Asian countries this is actually a continuing popular use of paper lanterns today.Practical: Namely, to be able to see in dark conditions in the home and for work. The use of antique and vintage lanterns were popular for 3 reasons: In industrialized nations, it’s not likely to see antique and vintage style lanterns used today without the aid of electricity. Kerosene lamps are still popular non-electrical light sources used today, if your power happens to go out or if you’re out roughing it on a camping trip. Lanterns have been made with a variety of materials throughout history using paper, wood, bamboo, animal hide, terracotta or clay.īefore electricity, popular light sources in lanterns would be a candle, or a wick soaked in nut oil, fish oil, olive oil, kerosene or whale oil. Materials used to make lanterns and lamps Let’s delve further into the construction and types of lamps to discover more. You may have even inherited some antique and vintage lanterns and lamps from your grandparents. If you look to buy a lantern at a retail store, most of the lanterns you can buy are replicas from this time period. Lanterns began to be mandated for public use to illuminate streets in Europe, and they were also used by guards called “watchmen” to help deter crime at night during the 19th century in the United States. Lanterns made during this time period in Europe were made to accommodate the use of whale oil, kerosene and candles. Innovations in lanterns began to happen in the 16th century and up until the beginning of the 20th century. At this level, you're getting two attacks each round with a 2d8+5 weapon, and you have Advantage if you're in dim light or darkness, which will happen a lot, although that's conditional.īut at 11th level, this starts to shine with your third attack per round. Sure, you are risking losing Concentration, but again, Fighter, so you're already Proficient in Con saves, and you probably will pick up War Caster, giving you Advantage, too, and you won't be getting hit all that often between armor, shield and the Shield spell. At its most basic level, it does 1d8 damage more than a Longsword or Rapier. It's a Wizard spell that isn't great for any Wizards except maybe Bladesingers, but for a Fighter? It's amazing.Ĭonsider: It's a Bonus Action to cast. Xanathar's Guide to Everything has been out for a long time now, and so it's probably fair to look at its content.Īn Eldritch Knight who hits Lv 8 can pick up Shadow Blade. Now you take Sharpshooter or Great Weapon Master, and give yourself Advantage on an attack to offset the -5 penalty for +10 damage.īut there's a stronger one: EKs get more powerful with more books. Regular EK: Take Find Familiar, one way or another. There's one standout example, but I'll also toss in a noteworthy trick that a regular EK can do. Your analysis is correct for PHB content the real power of EKs is being a spellcaster, meaning that their potential to get stronger increases every time WOTC drops a new book. So that would be our EK - or hypothetically a hexblade, pally/sorc, etc. But the person who gets the most of it uses both the weapon attacks and the bonus to spell attacks (on more than just the item's own scorching ray). Technically, either my wizard or our pally or barbarian could use it. The EK in our game got a magic sword that also adds a bonus to fire spell attacks and has a few charges of scorching ray per day. EK doesn't generally have any items that specifically leverage its hybrid nature (but it can use a lot) - but it could. A magic sword instead of a mace leverages proficiency. A Staff of Fire is a for caster who probably doesn't use other weapons. OTOH, it's stupid to think that the normal items aren't tailored for various characters. I think tailored items can also help the class with its offensive magic to help deliver the offensive magic fantasy. The subclass still works because Shield is really good, but that's not necessarily how it was intended to work (and of course the weapon attack cantrips don't even exist in the PHB, etc). The multiclass caster tank who chains Shields to float closer to 30 AC than to 20 doesn't really seem like an intended game play pattern - the defensive power in a panic button for a squishy isn't necessarily something that should be stacking with everything else (kind of like how Mage armor doesn't work for monks any more). What makes you think the descriptions are going to end up accurate to how things play out? I'm not really sure that Shield+real AC was necessarily intended to be a major thing that people would go nuts about. Of course, with the polearm feat, EK can also leverage booming blade differently with 2 feats which is expensive but neat to trigger the movement punishment at reach. Obviously if every sword and board person is going spear+ polearm feat to weaponize their bonus action, then two attacks plus bonus attack from the spear end is usually better than 2 attacks plus melee cantrip effect also at level 7. If you're playing to twenty, that feature isn't a big deal, but I'd expect that 1-4 (when single attack with a melee cantrip effect is often just better than an attack albeit you are trading BM maneuvers for it) and 7-10 is going to be a greater proportion of most people's play time than 11+. This is basically something that your test points miss, since by level 5 it hasn't happened, but by level 11 it's not as relevant since 3 attacks is usually better than two with the cantrip. Getting to attack as a bonus action when you cantrip means that at level 7instead of attacking twice, the EK can do Booming or Greenflame blade for extra damage and attack, so they're basically making two weapon attacks plus the cantrip bonus versus two attacks. The level 7 seems like a solid upgrade for EK without feats. Burton’s early career at Disney was difficult - but it set the tone for everything afterĪt CalArts, Burton animated several short films and developed his signature style as an illustrator of characters with amusingly exaggerated features. “So it was sickening, really, but it’s one of my few fond memories.” This seems to be a representative picture of the era at CalArts’ character animation department, and of Burton himself. “One year I did a bunch of makeup, and when I woke up, my face was stuck to the floor,” he recalled. The Vanity Fair CalArts profile reports a steady blur of wild parties, dark senses of humor, and perpetual impromptu performance art - all of which Burton essentially blended into his personal brand. (Incidentally, another figure who’d play a significant role in Burton’s career, Paul Reubens a.k.a Pee-wee Herman, was also on the campus studying theater at the same time.) He described them to Vanity Fair in 2014 as “ a collection of outcasts,” a group of artists who were united by general nerdiness and a shared excitement about taking artistic risks and experimenting. These included famed Disney animator Glen Keane, The Nightmare Before Christmas director Henry Selick, Brave director Brenda Chapman, and Lion King director Rob Minkoff. Disney had imagined an arts school designed specifically to educate new generations of animators, but it wasn’t until 1975 that the school began admitting students into a program to teach character animation.Ī year later, in 1976, Burton joined the new animator program, becoming one of a now-legendary era of CalArts animators who would collectively go on to profoundly impact the next four decades of animation. Disney died in 1966, but his brother and nephew were both on the school’s founding board of trustees. The characters are charming and imaginative, and have sufficient variety to sustain interest.” It would be the start of a long and sometimes contentious relationship with the Mouse.Īfter high school, Burton attended the prestigious California Institute of the Arts, which opened in 1961, partly out of the last great vision of Walt Disney himself. Disney told Burton that “the art is very good. He seemed to channel these sensibilities into his art, displaying a penchant for exaggerated caricatures and illustrations influenced by a range of pop art from advertising to children’s illustrators to comics.īy age 15, he was winning local advertising art contests, shooting creepy 8mm films around his neighborhood, and creating an illustrated children’s book of his own - which Disney, incidentally, rejected for publication, albeit with an encouraging note. He developed a love for Hammer horror films and B-movie sci-fi. When other kids played ball and rode bicycles, he hung out in cemeteries and wax museums. Where Burbank was sunny and benign, Burton was moody, interested in the dark and the macabre. 7M圆L4OIFJ- Nicky Locklear March 12, 2018īorn in 1958 in Burbank, California, Burton grew up with an inverse relationship to his surroundings. Tim Burton in his Halloween costume made by his mother. Burton grew up identifying with moody iconoclasts - and developing an art style to match Before that, he grew up absorbing a range of pop art styles and cinematic influences that later led to his becoming something of an alienated gothic hero - which still makes itself felt in his work today. Burton got his start in the industry working as an animator for Walt Disney Studios, where he began to develop his staple brand of quirkiness. The answers to these queries are more concrete than you might expect. Even in his new live-action Disney film Dumbo, which is something of a departure from Burton’s previous work - it’s a remake that doubles as a careful critique of its predecessor - it can still easily be called “ Burton-esque,” like all of his movies.īut what does it mean to be “Burton-esque?” Is there a way to catalog the visual ingredients of a Burton film? And how did Burton develop such a distinct visual style that continues to resonate so strongly with audiences? It’s hard to find a recent director whose distinct visual aesthetic has become so universally, immediately recognizable. Tim Burton is one of modern filmmaking’s best-known directors - largely because his films all look like Tim Burton films. New cast include Richard Crenna, Brenda Bakke, Miguel Ferrer, and Rowan Atkinson. Returning cast members include Charlie Sheen, Valeria Golino, Lloyd Bridges, and Jerry Haleva (as Saddam Hussein). Topper refuses, but when Walters is captured on the following rescue attempt, Topper agrees to go in and rescue everyone. His commanding officer Colonel Walters arrives to recruit him for a rescue mission to save American hostages from Saddam Hussein. This time the story is a near perfect recreation of Rambo III, where Topper has resigned himself to an Asian monk village. The movie did for Rambo what the original did for Top Gun. Hot Shots! Take a look at a list of films that he has said have influenced him.Topper: Why did you have to come here now? Of all the missions in all the jungles in the world, you had to come walking into this one. Perhaps more than almost any other filmmaker, Tarantino fills his movies with references to other films. Quentin Tarantino didn’t create his distinct style in a vacuum. In Tarantino’s dialogue-heavy films, food often speaks for itself. Without giving anything away, these similarities are crucial to the film’s climax, and they’ve all been established with barely a word. Both are loyal, and both are not to be messed with. This intercutting encourages the audience to notice the similarities between the dog and the man. The two then both devour their respective suppers simultaneously. It’s a meal that represents Cliff’s lifestyle as a whole - this is someone in arrested development. Cliff makes an overflowing plate for his pet, and we see how well-trained his canine friend is as Brandy waits for Cliff to finish preparing his own meal.Ĭliff’s dinner is one you might expect a hungry adolescent would make: a pot of mac ‘n’ cheese… eaten out of the pot. He’s got an entire cabinet dedicated to the burly pooch’s food. Max and Jackie’s relationship is one of the warmest of Tarantino’s filmography, and it’s this scene over a cup of coffee that makes that possible.įirst, we see that Cliff really loves this dog. When she reenters with the coffee, their conversation is less business-oriented, and more intimate. While Max is trying to figure out this mystery woman, she is obscured by kitchen cabinets in the other room while she makes the beverage. The making of coffee also gives the scene some dynamic blocking. When Jackie laments that the milk has gone bad, Max is perfectly content with black coffee. We also get to see the easy-going nature of Max on full display. Instead, Max accepts the offer, but only if Jackie herself is having some. Here, it’s a beverage to be shared, and, crucially, it isn’t being demanded. Notice how differently the presence of coffee is handled in comparison to the whiskey in the last scene. Couldn’t he have kept Lazarus from dying?”ģ8 Jesus was still angry as he arrived at the tomb, a cave with a stone rolled across its entrance. 36 The people who were standing nearby said, “See how much he loved him!” 37 But some said, “This man healed a blind man. They told him, “Lord, come and see.” 35 Then Jesus wept. 34 “Where have you put him?” he asked them. 32 When Mary arrived and saw Jesus, she fell at his feet and said, “Lord, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died.”ģ3 When Jesus saw her weeping and saw the other people wailing with her, a deep anger welled up within him, and he was deeply troubled. 31 When the people who were at the house consoling Mary saw her leave so hastily, they assumed she was going to Lazarus’s grave to weep. She called Mary aside from the mourners and told her, “The Teacher is here and wants to see you.” 29 So Mary immediately went to him.ģ0 Jesus had stayed outside the village, at the place where Martha met him. “I have always believed you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one who has come into the world from God.” 28 Then she returned to Mary. Do you believe this, Martha?”Ģ7 “Yes, Lord,” she told him. 26 Everyone who lives in me and believes in me will never ever die. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying. 22 But even now I know that God will give you whatever you ask.”Ģ3 Jesus told her, “Your brother will rise again.”Ģ4 “Yes,” Martha said, “he will rise when everyone else rises, at the last day.”Ģ5 Jesus told her, “I am the resurrection and the life. 21 Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if only you had been here, my brother would not have died. 20 When Martha got word that Jesus was coming, she went to meet him. 18 Bethany was only a few miles down the road from Jerusalem, 19 and many of the people had come to console Martha and Mary in their loss. Come, let’s go see him.”ġ6 Thomas, nicknamed the Twin, said to his fellow disciples, “Let’s go, too-and die with Jesus.”ġ7 When Jesus arrived at Bethany, he was told that Lazarus had already been in his grave for four days. 15 And for your sakes, I’m glad I wasn’t there, for now you will really believe. 10 But at night there is danger of stumbling because they have no light.” 11 Then he said, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but now I will go and wake him up.”ġ2 The disciples said, “Lord, if he is sleeping, he will soon get better!” 13 They thought Jesus meant Lazarus was simply sleeping, but Jesus meant Lazarus had died.ġ4 So he told them plainly, “Lazarus is dead. They can see because they have the light of this world. Are you going there again?”ĩ Jesus replied, “There are twelve hours of daylight every day. “Rabbi,” they said, “only a few days ago the people in Judea were trying to stone you. 7 Finally, he said to his disciples, “Let’s go back to Judea.”Ĩ But his disciples objected. No, it happened for the glory of God so that the Son of God will receive glory from this.” 5 So although Jesus loved Martha, Mary, and Lazarus, 6 he stayed where he was for the next two days. 3 So the two sisters sent a message to Jesus telling him, “Lord, your dear friend is very sick.”Ĥ But when Jesus heard about it he said, “Lazarus’s sickness will not end in death. 2 This is the Mary who later poured the expensive perfume on the Lord’s feet and wiped them with her hair. He lived in Bethany with his sisters, Mary and Martha. |
