Regular EK: Take Find Familiar, one way or another. There's one standout example, but I'll also toss in a noteworthy trick that a regular EK can do. Your analysis is correct for PHB content the real power of EKs is being a spellcaster, meaning that their potential to get stronger increases every time WOTC drops a new book. So that would be our EK - or hypothetically a hexblade, pally/sorc, etc. But the person who gets the most of it uses both the weapon attacks and the bonus to spell attacks (on more than just the item's own scorching ray). Technically, either my wizard or our pally or barbarian could use it. The EK in our game got a magic sword that also adds a bonus to fire spell attacks and has a few charges of scorching ray per day. EK doesn't generally have any items that specifically leverage its hybrid nature (but it can use a lot) - but it could. A magic sword instead of a mace leverages proficiency. A Staff of Fire is a for caster who probably doesn't use other weapons. OTOH, it's stupid to think that the normal items aren't tailored for various characters. I think tailored items can also help the class with its offensive magic to help deliver the offensive magic fantasy. The subclass still works because Shield is really good, but that's not necessarily how it was intended to work (and of course the weapon attack cantrips don't even exist in the PHB, etc). The multiclass caster tank who chains Shields to float closer to 30 AC than to 20 doesn't really seem like an intended game play pattern - the defensive power in a panic button for a squishy isn't necessarily something that should be stacking with everything else (kind of like how Mage armor doesn't work for monks any more). What makes you think the descriptions are going to end up accurate to how things play out? I'm not really sure that Shield+real AC was necessarily intended to be a major thing that people would go nuts about. Of course, with the polearm feat, EK can also leverage booming blade differently with 2 feats which is expensive but neat to trigger the movement punishment at reach. ![]() ![]() Obviously if every sword and board person is going spear+ polearm feat to weaponize their bonus action, then two attacks plus bonus attack from the spear end is usually better than 2 attacks plus melee cantrip effect also at level 7. If you're playing to twenty, that feature isn't a big deal, but I'd expect that 1-4 (when single attack with a melee cantrip effect is often just better than an attack albeit you are trading BM maneuvers for it) and 7-10 is going to be a greater proportion of most people's play time than 11+. This is basically something that your test points miss, since by level 5 it hasn't happened, but by level 11 it's not as relevant since 3 attacks is usually better than two with the cantrip. Getting to attack as a bonus action when you cantrip means that at level 7instead of attacking twice, the EK can do Booming or Greenflame blade for extra damage and attack, so they're basically making two weapon attacks plus the cantrip bonus versus two attacks. The level 7 seems like a solid upgrade for EK without feats.
